The FMI St. John’s Chapter hosted a regular series of
breakfast sessions, on the latest topics covering: “Fostering
Economic Growth” with ACOA’s Paul Mills, Vice-
President, Newfoundland and Labrador; “Update on NL
Economy” by Donna Brewer, Deputy Minister of Finance,
Government of NL; “An Update on the Public Sector
Accounting Board” by Tim Beauchamp, PSAB Director;
and, “Ethics in the Public Sector” with Senator Beth
Marshall, who sits on the Internal Economy, Budgets and
Administration Selection Committee. All sessions received
positive feedback with average attendance close to 100
people. The St. John’s Chapter is active in future session
planning with presentations expected by a senior member
of the Treasury Board of Canada, as well as, representatives
from the Office of the Controller General, from both
Newfoundland/Labrador and Ontario.
Membership is growing. Current membership is 249,
making the St. John’s Chapter the third largest FMI Chapter
in Canada. The Board is comprised of current and retired
federal, provincial and municipal governments, along with
a student from MUN’s School of Business. The success of
Chapter activities was due, in no small part, to the efforts
of a dedicated and highly qualified Board. Also contributing
greatly to this success was this year’s introduction of two
new initiatives: the Corporate Membership Program and
the Student Promotion Program. Corporate membership,
welcomed by all parties, cuts down on the administrative
work of our member organizations. Seats are prepaid and
employees of corporate members can attend each session for
a flat rate. The student program is administered in affiliation
with the Memorial University of Newfoundland, whereby
two students are eligible to attend each session free of charge.
FMI St. John’s drew names for two members to attend
PSMW 2014 Charlottetown in May, based on one entry for
each session attended since September. Planning has started
for PSMW to be held in St. John’s in 2016.
