The Fredericton fmi
*
igf Chapter had a successful 2013-
2014 Fall and Winter session. The Chapter took on a new
approach by, firstly, featuring two speakers per event and,
secondly, by focusing mainly on a breakfast format.
To kick off this new approach, on November 20th the
Chapter hostedTomScrimger, Assistant ComptrollerGeneral
with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat who spoke
about
“Managing More with Less.’’
Second presenter, Michel
LeBlanc, shared his experiences on implementing the Lean
Six Sigma program in the Government of New Brunswick.
His coaching drives a culture of continuous improvement.
To ring in the New Year, on January 16th guest speaker
Carey Blair, Audit Partner with KPMG, presented
“Standard
on Government Transfers and Financial Instruments.”
Mr.
Blair enlightened guests on the Public Sector Accounting
Standards as they apply to government transfers. In
conjunction with this presentation, David Nowlan with
New Brunswick’s Office of the Comptroller, ended the
breakfast session with the Office’s perspective as it applies
to these transfers.
On February 19th, the Chapter hosted
“The Certainty of
Death and Taxes’’
breakfast event. Guest speaker, Mike Allen,
Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, provided
an informative presentation on his Private Members bill,
C-549, and how it proposes to address the problems that
exist regarding tax measures. Grant Thornton’s Amy
Murdock, concluded the morning by discussing personal
financial planning implications as they relate to Will and
Estate Planning. Hence the clever event title!
With the East Coast Winter still going strong it didn’t
hamper Fredericton Chapter’s Evening Social March 27th.
The weather presented travelling challenges, however,
the Chapter was successful with the help of technology in
bringing Nancy Whipp, President and CEO of the CPA
NB Unification Agency to the evening via Face Time! Ms.
Whipp outlined the unification framework of the legacy
designations and the CPA Program. Feedback was extremely
positive and the Chapter hopes to host more social events
like these in the future.
The Chapter is pleased to announce that Madison Spragg
is the 2013-2014 recipient of the fmi

with Service New Brunswick and anticipates completion of
the CMA Program in August 2015. Congratulations!
The Fredericton Chapter would like to thank its many
volunteers, guest speakers and sponsors; CMA NB, KPMG
Canada, Grant Thornton LLP, and the Association of
Canadian Financial Officers (ACFO,) for their participation
in professional development events throughout the 2013-
2014 season.
