CHAPTER NEWS
Winter in Manitoba started early and proved to be both long
and cold. Despite this, FMI members and non-members
continued to come out and support the Manitoba Chapter’s
events in good numbers.
In October, a luncheon event was held titled “Evolution
of Citizen Centred Service Delivery”. This presentation was
made by Guy Gordon, Executive Director of the Institute
for Citizen‐Centred Service (ICCS). His presentation
focused on the expectations that Canadians have of public
services. Mr. Gordon presented evidence that Canadians
have some high expectations for services, and that these
expectations are growing. Governments, many of whom
are under tremendous fiscal pressure, are looking at a wide
range of options to transform their internal- and public-
facing services to meet these expectations. Mr. Gordon
discussed trends drawing from work the ICCS has done with
Canadian and International partners.
In early December, the Manitoba Chapter put together a
breakfast event that discussed the merger of the accounting
bodies. The recent vote of the CGA members, in favour of
beginning merger discussions with CA and CMA members
already merging into a CPA designation, provided us with
an opportunity to bring the groups together and discuss the
effects of the merger on upcoming students and registrants.
Ron Stoesz spoke on behalf of the CMA and CPA bodies,
along with Gary Hannaford of the ICAM. In particular,
these two came together to i) discuss the implications that
the merger would have on employee learning plans and,
ii) attempt to answer questions that managers anticipate
would be asked by their staff.
In March, FMI-Manitoba put on an interactive panel
discussion called “Millenials at Work”. Three presenters
from the local PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) office
discussed the different characteristics of the various

generations in the workplace: the Baby Boomer, the Gen X
and the Millenial. The audience watched these three interact
and discuss the various challenges each generation faces in
the workplace. They also provided some insight on how
to manage Millenials coming into the workplace. Robert
Reimer represented the Boomers; Kyla Kramps represented
the Generation X population while Travis Abas had the
challenge of representing the Millenials.
Each of these events brought in over 70 participants,
and gave members of the finance community not only an
opportunity to learn, but to also network and discuss changes
and opportunities in the various sectors represented.
FMI Manitoba took advantage of their PwC guests to aid
in the draw for the PSMW 2014 subsidy. The local winner
of the travel/event package was Bonnie Moore with the
Department of Fisheries and Oceans. She was very excited
to have the opportunity to attend PSMW 2014 in May and
in particular, to visit Prince Edward Island! Congratulations
Bonnie!!
As the Manitoba Chapter welcomes Trevor De Ryck (left) to its
Board, it (and expectant mama, Iding Sanchez) greatly anticipates
the arrival of its newest volunteer. Iding (second from left) will be
preoccupied for a year on maternity leave. The Chapter also bids
farewell to departing Board members, Don Baril-Bissett and Donna
Gueret. Have a great summer!
