CHAPTER NEWS
On October 22, 2013, the Victoria Chapter and Deloitte
held their inaugural breakfast PD Series. Forty-five members
braved the foggy Victoria morning to come to the Hotel
Grand Pacific to hear Andy Potter and Clayton Knight of
Deloitte provide an informative session entitled “Uncommon
Insight: Leveraging the Power of Analytics in the Public
Sector”. Although many government employees have access
to volumes of raw data, Andy and Clayton walked through
a demonstration of how they are able to drill down into the
correlations between this information to support government
in making evidence-based decisions. By the end of the session,
participants were able to see two specific examples of how
advanced analytics have delivered transformative results for
the public sector.
On November 13rd, the Victoria
Chapter hosted a “Lunch and
Learn” session with 35 members in
attendance. TheChapter welcomed
their feature speaker, Navy Captain
Luc Cassivi with the Department
of National Defense (DND,) who
spoke on the current fiscal climate
in the federal government and
the challenges faced by a budget
that does not necessarily grow
at the rate of inflation. These
budget pressures create a need for
change and strategic review in the organization. Captain
Cassivi discussed key internal and external factors affecting
the change agenda and the importance and challenges in
managing strategic communications.
On December 9th, 26 members had the opportunity to
hear John Heskin, Partner at KPMG’S Risk Consulting
Advisory Services Practices, highlight to what extent changes
in control or assessment processes may be necessary for the
transition to the new
Internal Control – Integrated Framework:
2013
. John provided some context to the 17 principles that
relate to the control framework. The main areas of change,
since the framework was developed in 1992 is the focus
on three key areas: awareness of fraud, involvement of IT
systems, and the reliance on outsourcing.
On March 5th and 6th 2014, Victoria held its Joint two
day CMA-CGA-FMI Workshop with great success. This
year’s topic was
Financial Stability and Resource Development
.
Over the two day event, more than a dozen presenters from
various organizations provided attendees with an overview of
the International, Federal and Provincial perspectives related
to financial and economic sustainability. BC’s Minister of
Finance, Michael de Jong’s key note address focused on
the expected growth of Liquid Natural Gas in BC and the
opportunities this development could create for the Province
in the future. Other presenters, including Oshani Perera of
the International Institute for Sustainable Finance talked
about how all investments have trade-offs and we need to
be aware of the risks and potential costs involved with our
decisions, because who will pay for these costs? Special thanks
to all the presenters as well as the key sponsors, KPMG and
the BC Public Service Agency for making this event a success.
